In the Casselli lab, we we seek to understand how pathogenic bacteria interact with their hosts during infection, with the goal of identifying new mechanisms that can be targeted for the development of prophylactics or therapeutics. To this end, we utilize laboratory models of Lyme disease to determine the bacterial, host, and environmental factors that influence Borrelia burgdorferi invasion into the central nervous system, as well as identifying the mechanistic drivers of downstream inflammatory disease.
